OBJECTIVES: Liposuction is a procedure that can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. It is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedure the world over. After the age of 18years, the total number of fat cells in the body does not increase as fat cells neither regenerate nor multiply .As the person gains weight; the fat cells increase in size due to depositon of fat in the cells. They decrease in size as the patient loses weight and the fat is mobilized out.. During liposuction, fat cells are suctioned out along with the fat and are removed permanently. Therefore, the results of liposuction can be permanent. The subsequent weight gain tends to be uniform and not restricted to the “bulges”. Liposuction is neither a substitute for dieting and exercise, nor is it a treatment for obesity. However liposuction can remove stubborn areas of localized fat that don't respond to traditional weight-loss methods. CANDIDATES FOR LIPOSUCTION: The best candidates for liposuction are physically healthy, normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in certain areas. It can be performed to improve cheeks, jowls, neck, arms, breast, back, abdomen, waist, hips and buttocks, inner and outer thighs, knees, calves and ankles. It can also be used to treat the male breast enlargement, or gynecomastia. It can be performed on several areas of the body at the same time, or together with other aesthetic plastic surgery CONSULTATION & PREPARATION: We will evaluate your health, determine where your fat deposits lie and assess the condition of your skin. We will explain the body-contouring methods that may be most appropriate for you in terms of effectiveness, safety, cost and appropriateness for your needs. For example, if you believe you want liposuction in the abdominal area, you may learn that an abdominoplasty or "tummy tuck" may more effectively meet your goals. Age is not a major consideration. Think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with us. RISKS & COMPLICATIONS: Liposuction is normally safe, as long as patients are carefully selected, the operating facility is properly equipped and the surgeon is adequately trained with a core training in plastic surgery & body contouring. Though rare, complications can and do occur. Risks increase if a greater number of areas are treated at the same time, or if the operative sites are larger in size as removal of a large amount of fat and fluid may require longer operating times Potential complications are asymmetry, rippling, superficial irregularities, pigmentation of the skin, bleeding, and problems with anesthesia. Temporary numbness of the skin and haematomas (blood accumulations) are possible mild complications. Infection is very rare. More serious complications involve loss of fluid or blood that can provoke shock, although this is now very rare with the tumescent technique. (read FAQs) HOSPITAL STAY/OUT-PATIENT: Smaller-volume liposuction is usually done on an outpatient however, if a large volume of fat will be removed, or if the liposuction is being performed in conjunction with other procedures, a stay in a hospital or overnight nursing facility may be required. ANAESTHESIA: Liposuction can be performed under local / regional (spinal\epidural) anesthesia along with intravenous sedation. However general anesthesia is preferred, if a large volume of fat is being removed OPERATING TIME: Approx. 1 to 4 hours. The time required to perform liposuction may vary considerably. THE SURGERY: There are several liposuction techniques that can be used to improve the ease of the procedure and to enhance outcome. Tumescent liposuction: a technique in which a medicated solution is injected into fatty areas before the fat is removed, is commonly used by us. It helps the fat to be removed more easily, reduces blood loss, provides anesthesia during and after surgery and also helps to reduce the amount of bruising after surgery. Incisions are usually 4 to 8-mm long and are often hidden in skin folds or lines. A narrow tube or cannula is inserted and used to vacuum the fat layer that lies deep beneath the skin. The suction action is provided by a vacuum pump or a large syringe. Fluid is lost along with the fat, and this fluid be replaced during the procedure to prevent shock. Patients are carefully monitored and receive intravenous fluids during and immediately after surgery. THE RECOVERY PERIOD: Temporary mild pain, especially in the first 48 hours can be treated with analgesics. Swelling, soreness, numbness, bruising usually last a few weeks. Dressings are applied on the small incisions. There will be a leak of the anesthetic fluid through the incisions in the first 24 hours. Dressings will be changed daily. Shower is allowed after 24 hours. You may have to wear a girdle for a few weeks. Stitches will be removed between the 5th and 7th day. You should start walking around as soon as possible to reduce swelling. You should be back at work within a few days following your surgery. Activity that is more strenuous should be avoided for about a month, some swelling may remain for 4 - 6 months or more. We will schedule follow-up visits to monitor your progress .(read FAQs) THE NEW LOOK: Improvement will become even more apparent after about 4 to 6 weeks, when most of the swelling has subsided and after about 3 months, the final contour will be visible. If your expectations are realistic, you will probably be very pleased with the results of your surgery. You may find that you are more comfortable in a wide variety of clothes and more at ease with your body. And, by eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise, you can help to maintain your new shape permanently. BACK TO TOP |
